What happens when a physio tears her own ACL?!

24/01/2023 By Louise Brown

When I tore my ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) playing netball last year, I thought putting my recovery into my own hands would be safe enough – I’ve helped countless other people come back from the same injury after all.

The first problem I encountered? The mental side of injuries like these.

I HATED not being able to do the exercise I love at the gym or play netball, couldn’t even kick a football around with my kids.

Pilates was my saviour and I spent months diligently doing the exercises that I’ve supported so many other patients to do in the past.

My knee improved but… Months on, my recovery wasn’t where I’d have expected it to be and I was still experiencing pain.

So I finally swallowed my pride and went to see another physio.

I needed eyes on that weren’t mine. Someone to pick up where my timing was off. Someone to show me where I was weakest, where I was losing form, where I had less control.

Despite feeling nervous and – to be honest – a bit silly about going, I came away from that first session buzzing.

It felt amazing not to be carrying all the responsibility myself, to feel supported and heard.

For the first time in nearly a year, I’d got real help, and I finally had some belief that I could properly rehabilitate.

After just 3 sessions I’m finally really confident in my knee again, back lifting at the gym – and I’ve even been skiing this weekend!

With NHS waiting lists SO long, and my colleagues in outpatients being deployed back to the wards to deal with the crisis now – the value you’ll get from a private physio will outweigh the cost no end.

If you’ve got an injury and you need support, don’t let money be a barrier to you seeking help – please get in touch and we can work something out!

P.S. Look, I really did get onto the slopes and my knee felt good!

Free 25-minute energy boosting Pilates

05/01/2023 By Louise Brown

There’s not much worse than trying to get through another day while you’re feeling fatigued or uninspired…

If you’re wondering how you can boost your energy levels healthily and enjoy your day-tp-day more, here are three simple ideas to get you started:

1. Restrict your sleep (really!)

Sounds a bit counter-intuitive but you’ll get more from your sleep at night if you sleep…less.

Cut out any daytime snoozing and get yourself into a regular routine, going to bed at the same time and setting an alarm for the same time every day. (Always helps to cut out screen time at least an hour before bed if you’re having trouble getting to sleep too.)

2. Head outdoors as much as you can

There are SO many health benefits to a good dose of sunlight – all that vitamin D will help to support your bone health, lower your blood pressure and prevent disease.

Sunlight also helps boost the serotonin chemical in your brain, giving you more energy and helping you to keep positive and focused. Win win!

3. Get moving and do some exercise

Any exercise will help release those lovely endorphins that make you feel good and reduce your sense of fatigue – but as a physio, I think Pilates is the very best thing you can do.

Not only is it a low-impact form of exercise (meaning it doesn’t leave you feeling particularly fatigued), it also improves your cardiorespiratory capacity.

The careful breathing patterns we practise during Pilates exercises serve to stimulate the flow of oxygen round your body and give you an energy boost that’s far healthier than any injection of caffeine!

Find some floor space to give my energy-boosting Pilates routine above a go and see how you feel?

Send me a message if you’ve got any questions, otherwise, hope you have a positive week with bags of energy to keep you going!
